In the early 1960s, Barbara Sansoni, an artist, was invited to design for women learning to weave in a convent workshop just north of Colombo. Colour, in simple rectilinear proportions, is the unpretentious characteristic of Barbara Sansoni’s style.

Barefoot, the company she founded, draws inspiration from the land and seascapes, earth, plants, and animals of Sri Lanka, using abstract geometry and vivid colour to produce beautiful and useful textiles. We can also be subtle and gentle in the way we use natural tones and brilliant whites.

Today, Barefoot has a band of dedicated designers who continue to work with skilled weavers in centres run and managed by us.

Barefoot also houses its own dye plant and a Central Environment Authority-certified water facility.

Under Barefoot’s umbrella is the Sansoni Warehouse department, a space dedicated to collaborating with skilled craftspeople who share Barefoot’s philosophy. The Warehouse department is greatly beloved and showcases fine crafts from around the island.
